Creativity is your Birthright!

This tuesday, Nov 2nd, is the 3rd session in a 4week class on creativity and painting called, "Creativity is your Birthright!" The class currently being held in the Art Work Out Room from 6 - 8pm and ends tuesday November 9th. All materials are provided and no experience in art is required. So far several intrepid painters from the community at large have stepped forward to let that brush touch the paper in uniquely personal expression of the intuitive side of the self.

"American Peasantry: Life and Labor in the Fields of California"

Creating the most substantial and extended visual account of any single group of workers in America, photographers of California farm workers today have become, in effect, organizing tools as important to the farm worker struggle as politicians, picket captains, labor leaders, reporters, boycotts, and strikes.

As an award-winning photographer, historian and journalist specializing in California agriculture and agricultural labor, Richard Steven Street will discuss the adventures, techniques, lessons and circumstance of social documentary photography. He will focus on several specific images by relaying the circumstances behind them and how they relate to his overall body of work.

The author of a multi-volume history of California farmworkers, Richard Steven Street, PhD has photographed California farmworkers since 1975 and teaches "Liberation Photography" at the James Weldon Johnson Institute for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies, Emory University.

Science Tarot Launch Party Tickets Now On Sale

For the last year and a half it has been my honor and pleasure to have been part of a collaborative project with several friends to create the SCIENCE TAROT - a complete tarot deck with images from the world of science. The project brings together compelling science, intriguing symbolism and beautiful artwork from talented artists.

It also brings together friends to help celebrate the launch of this huge, fascinating project!

On Thursday September 23 from 6:00 - 10:00 pm, the California Academy of Sciences will present a Night Life event around the theme of Science Tarot! Tickets are now ON SALE!

Pavlinac Solo Exhibit

Cindy Pavlinac has a solo exhibit of her fine art photography at the Numina Center for Spirituality and the Arts in Santa Rosa, CA through August 16. Sacred Places, Nature's Symmetry Celebrated, features French abbeys, Iona crosses, Scottish standing stones, international labyrinths, and Marin County waterfalls. This special invitational exhibit is part of the Numina Center’s Artful Afternoon Summer Chamber Music with the Locals series. There will be a gala reception for the artist on August 15 following the 4pm concert. Drop by and enjoy art photography and music together celebrating summer joie de vivre.

2nd Fridays Art Walk

This past 2nd Fridays Art Walk was certainly lively!

Aside from featured events at numerous downtown venues, there were 2 receptions at Art Works Downtown: "Realm of Dreams" featuring Phyllis Thelen and Barbara Andino-Stevenson and "SPIRITZ" featuring sculptures by Zwanda plus the Art Walk also featured a djembe drum circle led by Terry Garthwaite and beautiful "flour" art on the sidewalk, courtesy of artist Tim Armstrong.

"Art Day" at San Pedro School

Over 100 students from Kindergarten through third grade will be on the San Pedro Elementary School campus Saturday, April 3rd from 10:00 to 1:00 participating in Art Day. Students and families will be dancing, working with pastels, making mosaic picture frames, and designing their own canvas bags. Students will rotate through all of the different art stations.

"Art Day" is a free activity provided by Art from the Heart in partnership with Art Works Downtown, San Rafael-based nonprofits dedicated to enriching the lives of our community through art.

Art From the Heart comes to San Pedro’s after-school program twice a month to provide free art activities, but because kindergarten and most third grade students don't participate in the after-school program, "Art Day" brings an opportunity for these students to experience the arts.

Art from the Heart is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization reaching out to children of low-income families by providing after-school enrichment programs. The program gives children the opportunity to be actively involved in the arts – they become the artist, the performer, and the audience member.

Art from the Heart is focused on children in need, who might otherwise not have the opportunity to take music, voice, art, dance classes or to see a live performance. Its goal is to empower these children, build their self-confidence, and give them the opportunity to develop an appreciation and love of the arts.

Art from the Heart was founded 2007; however the partners, Kathy Eggert and Sheila Jones, possess years of experience working with children and the arts.

The spring fundraising season is upon us and it seems like there are events popping up everywhere. An annual event I support is the Blue Jean Ball. Proceeds go to support Integrated Community Services, a Marin agency that serves people with developmental disabilities. ICS has made a hugh difference in my son Ben's life. The movie club they sponsor has been instrumental in getting Ben out of the house and into the mall, independently navigating the social networking skills we so often take for granted. Last year several artists donated gift cards and we created a beautiful gift basket with one of a kind stationery and calligraphy pens. We also received several beautiful prints. I hope you'll consider making a donation this year. The Blue Jean ball is May 1st.

Today I taught the first class, "Painting with the Right Brain", to focus on the awesome combination of painting and creativity. The class is a result of a collaboration between AWDT, the College of Marin and the Marin County Office of Education. Several students from the special day class at COM came to AWDT for their first of 8 painting classes to be held this spring in the Art Work Out Room monday mornings. In these lean and mean times somehow we have found a spark to ignite that awesome combination of enthusiasm and art education. Where there is a need and a will to serve magic happens!

Harry Cohen and Richard Kamler are two accomplished artists who approach art from opposite perspectives: Cohen as an “action painter” and Kamler a “socially engaged artist.” See what happens when these distinguished artists sit down and discuss what it means to them to engage, commit and practice their obsession called art.

Harry Cohen
Harry Cohen is as he paints: joyful, exuberant, buoyant, colorful, and bright. His studio is a work of art, packed with canvas, color, hanging stabiles and mobiles. At age 85, Harry bounds around his studio without letting the spring in his step deflect the brushstroke he intends.

Action Painting may best define the artistic style of Cohen’s work with one caveat. Action Painting, as commonly defined, stresses the physicality and struggle of the creative process with process valued over the product. Harry’s working style - his process, painting and product - reflects joy, verve, and intelligence; not a struggle but an ebullient and vibrant quest.

Richard Kamler
Long time artist/activist/curator/educator Richard Kamler has been practicing “socially engaged art” since 1976 when he made his first major installation, Out of Holocaust, a full-size reconstructed section of one of the barracks from the Auschwitz Death Camp. Since that time his public installations, sound pieces, actions, events, drawings, sculptures, and public presentations have dealt with a range of various social and environmental considerations and have been exhibited nationally and internationally in a wide variety of venues, from museums to prisons.

Kamler has received numerous awards for his work, including fellowships, grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and the California Arts Council as well as many Artist-in-Residence programs such as spending 9 months in Petersburg, Baranof Island, Alaska doing “landscape installations” and 2 years as Artist-in-Resident in San Quentin Prison.

Harry may be ebullient but just wait until you get a hold of "Herb and Dorothy." This incredible documentary, yes it's on Netflicks, profiles the Vogels. Herb, a postal worker, and Dorothy, a librarian, amassed one of the largest collections of modern art which they donated to the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. Now in their eighties, finally having room for a new couch in their one bedroom, rent controlled apartment in Manhattan they did what any self-respecting art lover would do. They bought more art.

Dear Artists,

I have a co-worker who would like to commission an artist to do an 11 x 14" realistic charcole drawing of the picture below of his kids.

This drawing is a birthday gift and would have to be completed within 3 weeks and mailed to Boston (which I would do for you). His budget is around $200 but could go higher. I'm not very familiar with what pricing should be for a charcole of this size, so please give me honest feedback.

Please let me know right away if you are interested!

Also, I am looking for a series of 3-4 pieces for a corporate cafe. The art must be in a series, be appropriate for a corporation and look good against a red wall, and square format is preferred. The budget is small, only $800-$1000, so I expect the art to be copies of originals. The company will frame the work.

Expanding the Holiday Horizons

Saturday night, December 12th is the first night of Hanukkah along with being the first day of our Holiday Open Studios. Hanukkah lasts 7 days and eight nights. Although not a major jewish holiday it is an opportunity for families to get together and often exchange gifts. The predominant colors are blue and white. I will probably put up a menorah in my studio as part of our holiday decorations.

In response to these troubled times where art programs are among the first to be cut we are forming a committee to act as laison between AWDT and the community of people with special needs and their service providers. I am starting an Art Reach Out committee. Our first event is friday, November 9th. I've invited the special day class students from the College of Marin to tour our Day of the Dead exhibit that morning. If you will be in your studio please let me know.

If you live or work at Art Works Downtown or in our immediate neighborhood, or you have volunteered for us, or feel like you are part of our extended community, please join us at the end of the tour for a Community BBQ/Potluck this Wed 10/14 at 6pm in the back of the building. It may rain so the party will take place inside the back door (through T&B's Alley on D Street)

Times they are a changin'. The Yoga Source on the beautiful west end of 4th St located near Rebound Bookstore will start offering a lunchtime Kundalini Yoga class on Wednesdays at 12:15. The first class is September 9th and the cost is $10.

There will be a free open house on Wednesday September 30th, come check the place out! No Yoga gear required. They have it all.

Starting in October, I will be teaching a Sat Nam Rasayan class every second Wednesday of the month. Sat Nam Rasayan is a meditation designed to sooth the soul. First class is October 14th, same time/12:15, same price/$10. Art is a many splendored thing!

As the wild west end of 4th St., in beautiful downtown San Rafael, continues to beautify and gentrify I will be substitute teaching at the Yoga Source located at 1570 near the corner of F St. The Yoga Source is a gem of a yoga studio. It's beautiful, it's comfortable and the classes are reasonably priced. Plus all the materials are on hand - mats, cushions, blankets, etc.

I will be teaching an introductory set of Kundalini Yoga and a beginning class of a meditation practice called San Nam Rasayan. The cost is $15 and I will be there this thurs 7/1, sat 7/4 and the following thurs 7/9. As my Yoga teacher once said, "If you can relax it, you can heal it!"

I'd like to thank all the artists who donated to the Integrated Community Services (ICS) event which was held May 2nd at the JCC in San Rafael. In these economically challenged times ICS was able to raise a little bit more than last year, let's hear it!, and your artistic endeavors made a big difference. Thanks to Ann Brooks, Marilyn Greenblat, Stephanie Jucker, Barbara Poole, Susan Searway, Barbara Stevenson, Gail Teehan, and Susan Thicken. The proceeds to go help developmentally disabled men and women receive training on the job and in their living situations which allows them to live more independent and productive lives. Thanks also to our friends on 4th St. - Viva Diva, Bella, Pleasures of the Heart and KIM of Marin.

Hi everyone!

I went to AWD's Social Media seminar on March

7th thinking I wasn't going to do "any of that stuff" (great seminar Bruce, thanks for setting it up.)

Two days later, the light dawned! Yes, I could use the blog to drive visitors to my other sites. Launched a blog with Blogger. Found they striped all the metadata out of images I had uploaded: my copyright, name, contact info.

Suddenly my images were in public domain with no copyright info/protection (the © you see on the photo is different. It's a visual watermark done in photoshop.)

After a only a week with Blogger I cut my losses. Switched to a Wordpress hosted blog. Bless them, they leave every bit of digital meta in the image file and when uploaded, offer a form for adding more.

I'm thrilled with my new, new blog and invite you to visit it. You'll find another, bigger, protected version of Fluff Muffin, along with the two other images, all new notecards in my studio and more stuff. Let me know what you think -- comments place is just below each post title.

I'd be happy to share what little I've learned (so far) about setting up blogs. I'm usually in my studio late afternoons Fri & Sat. Some Thursdays.

ICS fundraiser

For the past five years my son Ben has received services from an agency in Marin called Integrated Community Services or ICS. Ben has a neuro-genetic developmental disorder called Velo-Cardio Facial Syndrome or VCFS...all god's children got initials! He's missing a part of chromosome 22 and faces a wide range of challenges.

ICS helps clients with special needs by providing life skills and job training. Ben had a one on one coach in his first job - packing bags of food for the homeless at Ritter House in San Rafael.

Since then Ben has joined the ICS movie club and friday bowling group. If you meet Ben most likely he will ask you, "Seen any good movies lately?"

The Blue Jean Ball, which is the agency's annual fundraiser, will be held May 2nd. No donation is too small. For example, I am thinking of putting together a basket of notecards. In these lean and mean times if you can see your way to help us out your support would be greatly appreciated.

Art and Poetry Reading Combination
CB Follett is having a one woman art show at the O'Hanlon Center for the Arts at 616 Throckmorton, Mill Valley, CA 94941. In The Loft, I will be showing Quilt Collages, and hand made and limited edition books. Also some photograph in bins. The Quilts are 16 panel collages on #4 bristol board. They are reversible and free standing. Also some framed 'quilts' which include poetry. The show is the month of February 2009. The reception for the artwork will be Tuesday, February 3 from 6-8 pm, in conjuction with Mill Valley's Art Walk, and the show in the adjacent O'Hanlon Gallery. ALSO: A solo poetry reading, celebrating the publication of AND FREDDIE WAS MY DARLING by CB Follett just published by Time Being Books. These are poems of growing up in the 40s and 50s. The reading is in THE LOFT at the O'Hanlon Center (see above), Thursday, February 12th at 7 p.m.

This Friday, Dec 12, during 2nd Fridays Art Walk, we have 2 receptions between 6-8pm!

AWD's Small Works Show in our main 1337 Gallery and Deborah Darling Gray's "Mythology Series" downstairs in the Underground Gallery.

Then, on Saturday Dec 13, AWD holds its first Art Bazaar from 11am-5pm. AWD artists and associates will be selling art and one-of-a-kind gifts at special prices just in time for the holidays. We will have special areas throughout the building and even a card-making station for the kids.

Join us for a festive day that includes refreshments and holiday entertainment.

I've been busy being Miss Jucker the Art Teacher to 400 kids at an elementary school in San Rafael. The day after the election one child just spontaneously made this. Pretty good huh?

Many thanks for all those who worked so hard to make the '08 Open Studios such a lively and successful affair! I'd start naming names but I'm afraid I'm going to leave someone out. Except for the extremely gorgeous poster design, the incredibly creative cigar box hunt and raffle, fantastic volunteers, the untold hours of organization and angst and meetings - well, you know who you are!

Not to mention the artistic support in the form of pumpkin cheese cake!

We're having a great time drawing from life - vintage dresses and bowling shirts, funky shoes, old rusty parts, Jason's mannequins – and we've gone outside to sketch the plants in the alley garden. New Opportunities

We are finalizing plans to offer the large classroom aka the Art Work Out room, Studio 26, for classes and workshops. From September to June, the room will be available weekday evenings and also on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. Summer hours will vary. Please start planning so we can anticipate a robust class calendar. Please ask about hourly rates, there is a discount for AWD artists.

Also, we are offering the little classroom, now called The Underground Gallery, as an art gallery for rent. Move-in dates will coincide so you can have a reception during one of our 2nd Friday Art Walks. There is also a discount for AWD artists for the monthly rate.

We hope you will take advantage of these new opportunities as we promote ways for artists to get more exposure to the public and for the public to get more exposure to the arts.

More information will be forthcoming but if you have any questions, please call the gallery desk.

Thank you to all artists and associates who have created a plate for our silent auction. If you have not turned your plate in, please give them to the front desk, we have a lot of prep to do for the event so the sooner we can finish cataloging all auction items, the better.

If you have not already purchased your tickets, please do so asap. If you want to win a sponsored artist ticket to the event, please contact the front desk. And, please invite some people that you think will enjoy the event and help support your art center.

We still need some volunteers, especially to serve food during the event and to help clean up on Sunday. Contact Shari if you want to lend a hand or you know someone who would be interested in helping.

And don't forget to don your mod fashions and 60's duds. As always, Artrageous will be a fabulous and fun event - this year's theme is The Silver Factory.
